JBL Flip 4 vs UE Wonderboom comparison
Design and features
These are very different looking speakers, made with similar materials. Both are wrapped in a very durable fabric and rubber. Both speakers are available on a variety of colors. The JBL Flip 4 is almost twice taller compared to UE Wonderboom. On the other hand Flip 4 has a smaller circumference, so the flip 4 might fit in to your bag easier. Wonderboom weighs nearly 100 grams more than Flip 4.
Both gadgets have a strand to hang the speaker to something, only difference is it is removable in Flip 4. Both feel extremely well built and durable. Unlike JBL, the Wonderboom is shock proof tested from 5 feet.
Both are fully waterproof and IPX7 rated. This means they can fully survive being submerged in water 1 meter deep up to 30 minutes. Now there’s a difference:
JBL Flip 4 wont float in water. If you drop it into a pool or lake it is going to go the bottom where the UE Wonderboom will float. So the Wonderboom gets the edge in durability since it is shock proof and can float.
Both products has all the buttons they need, JBL also has led indicators for the battery level whereas in UE, you need to press volume + and – together by which you will get a sound feedback.
Speakerphone
JBL Flip 4 has a built in microphone so that you can take calls and attend conferences. The Wonderboom misses the mic altogether, so it would be a disappointment for those who look for integrated speakerphones, Siri or Google voice controls. Wonderboom is also missing the auxiliary port which is present in Flip 4.
Simultaneous playback
Wonderboom can connect to a single wonderboom for simultaneous playback. But there is no option to use them as separate left and right channels. The flip 4 will allow you to connect to another flip 4 for stereo playback, and also allows you too connect up to a 100 similar speakers using the JBL Connect +. So if connecting multiple speakers is your thing, JBL Flip 4 gives you more flexibility.
Bluetooth range
UE speakers has a great wireless range and same goes for the Wonderboom. It is rated up to 100 feet. In practical use you will get up to 60 feet in a typical house environment.
The Flip 4 is almost as good with just over 50 feet range, it will drop only when you walk outside of your house.
Battery life
When it comes to battery life, Wonderboom is rated at 10 hours and Flip 4 rated at 12. But in preactical use the diffrence is huge. With both playing music around 75 percent, JBL gives us 13 hours of playback versus just 7 hours from the UE.
Sound quality
The Wonderboom offers a solid performance, the main highlight is its 360 degree sound. Both speakers has two 40mm drivers along with dual passive radiators. With the Wonderboom, you will get a very uniform sound around the speaker, it provide a very solid base too. But it just cant cop up with the clarity that you’ll get on the Flip 4 on the low end. The flip 4 just sounds better overall with more open and brighter sound. Flip 4 also gets a little louder too.
Verdict
The Ultimate Ears Wonderboom is definitely a solid speaker and it is great if you are looking for a super rugged product. But the few extra dollars you spend on Flip 4 would be definitely worth it because of its battery life, sound quality and more features.
